Students are graded on appearance, professionalism, personality, and class performance.
A diploma will be awarded after successful completion of a 35-hour course schedule. Grading will be on a pass/fail basis, and instructors will evaluate students on each course. A test will be administered by the director upon completion of the 35 hours of course work. Makeup classes will be offered upon approval of the director.
Your certification by the School depends on successful completion of the following courses:
Introduction to Bartending (1 hour) This course serves as an introduction to the program.
Bar Management, Beverage Control, and Inventory (1 hour) This segment touches on management techniques and provides an understanding of pricing and profit methods. Inventory calculations will also be explained.
Opening and Closing Procedures (1½ hour) Teaches the student how to prepare the bar for the opening of a shift and how to closeout a register.
Liquor Orientation (1 hour) Before learning how to make a drink, the student must be familiar with the wide range of beers, liquors, wines, and aperitifs, including their differences and similarities.
Mixology (20 hours) Every student will learn how to make 150 drinks correctly, efficiently, and neatly. To be certified, a student must get behind the bar to demonstrate that he or she can prepare the drinks in our cocktail recipe book. This segment includes the art of garnishing.
Alcohol Awareness (5 hours) This course teaches the future bartender how to promote responsible drinking and explains the strategies one can use to make sure that overdrinking does not lead to serious highway injury or death.
Lessons on Beer Systems (½ hour) This segment teaches the student how to keep the beer from going “flat” and how to change a keg when the keg runs dry.
Pennsylvania State Laws (1 hour) Students must learn all the LCB and health laws of the state.
Pricing and Money handling (2 hours) This practical course assists the student in understanding pricing based on drink ingredients and in calculating bartabs and accepting payments.
Customer Service (2 hours) Through role-playing, students learn how to handle difficult situations such as how to deal with drunks, loudmouths, or obnoxious individuals.
